Understanding Addiction

Addiction has been described as “a cunning and baffling disease”. People on the outside looking in wonder “Why doesn’t he just quit after a couple of beers? Why does his wife put up with his drinking? If these people would just make up their minds to repent and have faith, shouldn’t that make the problem go away?” And the people on the inside, who have the addiction – they don’t like what they’re doing, but they find themselves operating with a distorted logic system, and they’re horrified to see their addiction persuading them to do things they swore they’d never do. It can seem hopeless, but there is hope, with an understanding of what addiction really is, and how God’s grace provides ways to keep addictions from running our lives.
